Food Forest Open Source Hub

Food Forest Open Source Hub

A food forest is, as the name implies, a forest of food. The goal of this gardening and land management system is to mimic a woodland ecosystem with companion planting of edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals grown in a succession of layers. Fruit and nut trees are usually the canopy/overstory, while below is the understory of berry shrubs and edible ground plantings. Beneficial plants, or “companions,” are included to attract insects for natural pest management, as soil amenders providing nitrogen and mulch, or for other benefits. Working together, the plants form a forest garden ecosystem that functions long-term to increase water retention and infiltration, protect the soils from heavy rainfall events, establish windbreaks, increases soil fertility, expand wildlife habitat, and provide food, building and craft materials, medicines, and more.

Stewards of the Earth - One Community Weekly Update #28

Stewards of the Earth - One Community Weekly Update #28

One Community is creating blueprints for anyone interested in making a difference in their life and the lives of others. Everything we do is based on a philosophy of living and creating for The Highest Good of All. Our ultimate expression of this is the creation of open source and free-shared blueprints for self-sufficient and self-replicating teacher/demonstration communities, villages, and cities to be built around the world. These teacher demonstration hubs, with One Community as the first, will comprehensively and simultaneously address food, housing, energy, social injustice and inequality, education, fulfilled living practices, and more. Our solution-based thinking and open source model is designed to address all of these areas together because they are all connected.

Straw Bale Village - One Community Pod Two

Straw Bale Village - One Community Pod Two

The straw bale architecture village (Pod 2) is the second of seven different sustainable village models to be built. The straw bale village was chosen as the second village to be built because it will demonstrate modularly expandable sustainable housing. It demonstrates the straw bale method of construction along with many eco-artistic external and functional internal options. This page contains the following sections related to the straw bale village:

Earthbag Village Materials & Costs

Earthbag Village Materials & Costs

The purpose of our organization is to make the building of self-propagating self-sufficient teacher/demonstration communities, villages, and cities as easy as possible. It is also to demonstrate food, housing, and energy for 100 people can be built for less than the cost of supplying these things for just 10 people in the current system. Clearly defining exactly what the materials costs are for duplication of every component of the earthbag village is an important part of this. This page is the results of our research and it will evolve with even more details as we build the earthbag village and identify through our experience the best materials and partners that can reduce the price for acquiring all needed tools and equipment. We will open source these details here as they evolve.

WHAT WE WILL ULTIMATELY ACCOMPLISH

Hoop House Open Source Hub

Hoop House Open Source Hub

As part of One Community’s four-phase strategy and global change methodology, our initial food infrastructure will be open source project-launch blueprinting on-going use of ultra-affordable hoop houses as part of our food production infrastructure. The food produced in these hoop houses will be food staples and foods we feel can be produced more cost effectively and efficiently with this method versus growing in the aquapinis and walipinis. This will include foods like potatoes, onions, beets, cucumbers, squash, etc. These foods will also be accessions as part of our open source botanical garden model. This open source hub includes the following sections:
